Crowns

A crown, sometimes referred to as a "cap," is an artificial covering cemented over an existing tooth that has been specially prepared by your dentist. Our dentist may recommend a crown if your tooth is fractured, has a large old filling or is severely damaged by decay.

Benefits of Crowns

  • Repair chipped or fractured teeth
  • Teeth can be lightened to any shade
  • Fill gaps in teeth
  • Restore and maintain your bite
  • Improve your smile and chewing ability
  • Last longer than any other type of restoration

What to Expect During Crown Treatment

Your dentist will first determine whether a cerec, in-office, crown or lab crown would be appropriate for you.  A cerec crown requires a single visit to the office.  At this appointment, an x-ray will be taken of your tooth.  The dentist will prep the tooth by removing any decay and weak areas on the tooth.  Once the prep is complete, an image will be taken of the tooth for the dentist to use in designing a cover to put over your tooth.  Our in-office milling machine will use the dentist's design to shape a crown made from porcelain to cover the tooth.

A lab crown requires two visits.  Rather than milling the crown in-office, the lab will use an impression taken by our office after the tooth is prepped.  The dentist will place a temporary crown on the tooth until the lab delivers the permanent crown.  Once the permanent crown is placed, the dentist will check your bite and chewing accuracy before cementing the crown in place.
