Scaling and root planing is a nonsurgical gum disease treatment that can reduce the size of your periodontal pockets and treat mild to moderate periodontal disease. Scaling and root planing allows us to remove plaque and bacteria from the roots of your teeth, below the gum line. We also smooth any rough patches on the teeth to encourage your periodontal tissue to reattach.
Osseous surgery is also known as flap surgery and is utilized in severe cases of periodontal disease. With osseous surgery, Dr. Troutman makes an incision in the gums to remove bacteria and plaque from the teeth. Next, rough areas on the teeth and bone are smoothed. Then the excess gum tissue is trimmed and the remaining tissue is reshaped and stitched in place.
A gingivectomy is a procedure used to remove gum tissue. When performed to treat gum disease, Dr. Troutman will remove diseased tissue and reshape the remaining tissue to reduce periodontal pocket size. When performed to fix a gummy smile, excess tissue is removed to uncover more of the tooth surface.
Periodontal maintenance is like a deep cleaning that is designed to clear away plaque and bacteria from underneath the gum line. Performed at intervals of three to four months, we can keep the bacterial population that initially caused your gum disease at lower levels to ensure your periodontal health after osseous surgery.
